St. Francis Outdoor Service and BBQ Lunch Big Success

A large group of parishioners and many guests attended the first of three outdoor services to be held the second Sunday of June, July and August.  Alternative music was the order of the day and a fantastic job was done by all.  The always welcomed church dog made his presence known with a number of sticks and rocks as his offering.  It’s always good to see him join us. If you missed this service you will have two more chances this summer in July and August.

What Do Episcopalians Believe?

The Episcopal Church has its roots in the Church of England, becoming a self-governing church body with the end of the American Revolution. Like other churches in the Anglican Communion, the Episcopal Church stands squarely in the Reformed tradition, yet considers itself just as directly descended from the Early Church as the Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodox churches. Episcopalians celebrate the Holy Eucharist in ways similar to the Roman Catholic tradition, yet do not recognize a single authority, such as the Pope of Rome.

Unique to Anglicanism is the Book of Common Prayer, the collection of worship services that all worshipers in an Anglican church follow. It’s called “common prayer” because we all pray it together, around the world. The first Book of Common Prayer was compiled in English by Thomas Cranmer in the 16th Century, and since then has undergone many revisions for different times and places. But its original purpose has remained the same: to provide in one place the core of the instructions and rites for Anglican Christians to worship together.

Episcopalians believe that every Christian must build an understanding and relationship with God’s Word in the Bible, and to do that, God has given us intelligence and our own experience, which we refer to as “Reason.” Based on the text of the Bible itself, and what Christians have taught us about it through the ages, we then together sort out our own understanding of it as it relates to our own lives.

Searching For A New Rector

Update - JUNE 21, 2009

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

The rector search committee met Monday evening, June 15th, and solidified our focus on three very attractive rector candidates.  With the bishop’s help and the assistance of our diocesan consultant Stephen Askew, we have been able to complete our reference checks and proceed with formal background checks on each of these three candidates as well.

Wine Tasting Attracts Several Guests
The Pinot Grigio tasting last Friday night was attended by 23 people, including several first time attendees. Below are the results with the rankings and prices. Every single wine was rated number one by at least one person, so the important thing is to remember what you liked. cont. Small Groups

St. Francis Coffee Mugs Now Available

Show your St. Francis spirit as you sip your morning cup of coffee or tea!  Our cheerful saint raises his arms in blessing to the animals on these classy green and white ceramic mugs.

The mugs are included in the welcome bags given as part of our Hospitality ministry to guests and visitors on Sunday mornings, but members are invited to purchase their own mugs for $ 8 each.  All the monies collected from sales to members will go to fund the purchase of mugs for the welcome bags.

You will want to buy an extra mug to take to work too—they are great conversation-starters and may enable you to extend an invitation to a coworker to come visit St. Francis.  The mugs are available in the narthex.  See Kevin Sneary for additional information.

Please welcome Marie to St. Francis.  Below is a short bio so we can all get to know her better.

After living in Atlanta, Georgia for a number of years, Marie has returned to the Chattanooga area to be closer to family.  Prior to her recent move back, she worked directly for a reputable business owner the last 16 years helping to build, grow and manage two successful real estate companies, Jenny Pruitt & Associates, REALTORS and Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International.  Before getting into real estate, she worked for The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company assisting with their marketing efforts and also worked for The Krystal Company here in Chattanooga preceding her move to Atlanta.

Marie has two grown children, Kristin and Matt, both in Atlanta and she now lives with her husband, Pat, right here in beautiful Ooltewah.

 THE HOPE MASONS

Building Hope- One Brick At A Time

We had our first meeting and named our team.  We had discussed getting Bo Armstrong to show us how to make bricks to sell to raise money and that inspired the naming of our team.  John Rouser mentioned that the company where he works is just down the road from where the Relay is going to be held and he has already had it approved for us to use the building as a “staging area” for our team that night.  We also briefly discussed fundraisers.  Several ideas have been suggested such as a carwash, bake sale, etc.

We will have T-shirts made for us to wear that night.  If anyone would like to sponsor us either personally or with your company we would be glad to talk to you about putting your name on the T-shirts or on our booth.

This is a team for the Relay for Life walkathon for the American Cancer Society walkathon which takes place on May 1st,

COME AND JOIN US!
