What Do Episcopalians Believe?

The Episcopal Church has its roots in the Church of England, becoming a self-governing church body with the end of the American Revolution. Like other churches in the Anglican Communion, the Episcopal Church stands squarely in the Reformed tradition, yet considers itself just as directly descended from the Early Church as the Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodox churches. Episcopalians celebrate the Holy Eucharist in ways similar to the Roman Catholic tradition, yet do not recognize a single authority, such as the Pope of Rome.

Unique to Anglicanism is the Book of Common Prayer, the collection of worship services that all worshipers in an Anglican church follow. It’s called “common prayer” because we all pray it together, around the world. The first Book of Common Prayer was compiled in English by Thomas Cranmer in the 16th Century, and since then has undergone many revisions for different times and places. But its original purpose has remained the same: to provide in one place the core of the instructions and rites for Anglican Christians to worship together.

Episcopalians believe that every Christian must build an understanding and relationship with God’s Word in the Bible, and to do that, God has given us intelligence and our own experience, which we refer to as “Reason.” Based on the text of the Bible itself, and what Christians have taught us about it through the ages, we then together sort out our own understanding of it as it relates to our own lives.

Wine Tasting Group Has Successful Outing

We had 27 people attend the Holiday Spirits Tasting on November 21st. Here is a recap of the wines in the order we set them out.

Table Wines:

King Estate Pinot Gris Oregon Signature Collection 2007

St. Francis Chardonnay Sonoma County 2007

Pinot Evil Box

URUCO Blend

Moulin de La Lagune

Brazen Zinfandel

Dessert Wines:

Michele Chiarlo Nivole Moscato d'Asti 2008

Arrington Vineyards Raspberry

I hope you all enjoyed some of the spirits we had also.

We will continue the practice of having the tastings on Friday evenings except during high school football season. The next tasting will be on Friday, February 5th. Originally we said the 12th, but that turns out to be the weekend of the Diocesan Convention. We will return to the format of blind tasting six wines. Cabernet Sauvignon was chosen as the wine featured for the event. It seems to me you can find more and more good Cabs these days. That’s probably why this is a varietal that is gaining in popularity.

St. Francis Coffee Mugs Now Available

Show your St. Francis spirit as you sip your morning cup of coffee or tea!  Our cheerful saint raises his arms in blessing to the animals on these classy green and white ceramic mugs.

The mugs are included in the welcome bags given as part of our Hospitality ministry to guests and visitors on Sunday mornings, but members are invited to purchase their own mugs for $ 8 each.  All the monies collected from sales to members will go to fund the purchase of mugs for the welcome bags.

You will want to buy an extra mug to take to work too—they are great conversation-starters and may enable you to extend an invitation to a coworker to come visit St. Francis.  The mugs are available in the narthex.  See Kevin Sneary for additional information.
